What should an Actionstep health check include?

The short answer

A good health check reviews configuration, workflows, data quality, reporting, user adoption, governance and integrations against how your firm actually works — then hands you a prioritised list of findings and quick wins. It's a review, not a rebuild: nothing changes in your system, and you leave with a clear picture of what's holding the firm back.

Most firms don't have a broken Actionstep — they have an under-used one. A health check exists to find the gap between what the platform could do for your firm and what it's actually doing today. Here's what a thorough one covers.

The checklist

Configuration

  • Are matter types set up for each practice area, or is everything forced through a generic one?
  • Do statuses, phases and fields match how matters really progress?
  • Is the configuration documented, or does it live in one person's head?

Workflows

  • Are workflows automating steps, or are staff driving matters manually?
  • Do tasks, deadlines and reminders fire automatically at the right points?

Data quality

  • Duplicate contacts, inconsistent naming, empty key fields?
  • Is data structured well enough to report on reliably?

Reporting

  • Can partners see capacity, WIP, lock-up and profitability without a spreadsheet marathon?
  • Are the right dashboards in front of the right people?

Adoption

  • Where is the team quietly working around the system?
  • Is time being captured properly, or reconstructed at month-end?

Governance & security

  • Are permissions and access appropriate to roles?
  • Are trust and compliance requirements supported by the configuration?

Integrations

  • Do email, document management, accounting and telephony connect cleanly, or is data re-keyed between systems?
What good looks like

A health check should end with a short, prioritised list — the two or three changes that would make the biggest difference now, not a hundred-page audit nobody reads.

What you should get out of it

A useful health check leaves you with a prioritised set of findings, the quick wins available immediately, and an honest recommended next step — including whether you even need outside help. Nothing in your live system should change during the review itself.

That's exactly how ours works: complimentary, no obligation, and the same place every partnership begins. See the full health check or book one.

Related questions

Is a health check the same as an implementation review?

They overlap, but a health check is broader and lighter — it looks across configuration, data, reporting, adoption and governance to find where value is being left on the table, rather than auditing a single project.

Will you change anything in our system during the check?

No. A health check is a review, not a build. Nothing changes in your live system unless and until you decide to proceed with work.

How long does an Actionstep health check take?

It starts with a short conversation and a focused review. We keep it lean so you get practical findings quickly rather than waiting on a drawn-out audit.
